COVER STORY
ANN & regression analysis based predictions of BOD5 & COD for refinery wastewater
Models based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) are fast emerging as an alternative tool to predict and forecast water quality parameters based on a well-defined set of training data that are easily available. The present study reports the correlations for BOD5 and COD with TOC for a refinery wastewater. Additionally, 12 ANN based models were developed to forecast the BOD5 and COD by considering other water quality indices as the input data. The results from this study indicate that ANNs are simple and reliable, under adequately trained conditions.

INTERVIEW
"We are confident our global business will expand with this new unit"
Clad in blue jeans and a T-shirt, the managing director of HRS International Ltd with short brown hair bears a striking resemblance to a Hollywood superstar. Though a frequent visitor to India, Steven Pither's current visit has been quiet an eventful -- the inauguration of HRS Process Systems' manufacturing facility in Pune. "I'm totally upbeat," he said. "It had been a long-cherished dream to set up a manufacturing unit in India. Now it has come true," said Pither in an interview to Balakrishnan Nair. The new plant of HRS Process System (HRS) which was recently inaugurated in Pune will manufacture Ecoflux corrugated tube heat exchangers, Unicus dynamic scrape surface heat exchangers and piston pump and systems.
Gokul Das, Director, who was not present during the meeting, shares his opinions on company's activities.

FOCUS
Bio-treatment of high strength toxic petrochemical (acrylonitrile)
wastewater to reduce COD and cyanide
Many chemical or biological methods are used for cyanide removal
from petrochemical wastewater; but biological treatment is the most
commonly used technique worldwide and also the most economical
for the treatment of both industrial and domestic wastewater.

Water industry in India - A business perspective -
Apart from the global water players, a number of Indian infrastructure
companies with a global vision, are making an entry into Indian water industry. The success of these large players will depend on their capacity to developin-house process design and process engineering capabilities and to offer their technical services as a total water solution provider, rather than acting as an EPC contractor only, with a long term market strategy.

ENVIRONMENT
Hazardous area classification of flammable dust operations
Many industries such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, petrochemicals handle combustible powders. It is estimated that at least 70% of the dusts handled in industry are combustible, but the potential for the ignition of dusts by electrical apparatus is being largely ignored in India.

POLLUTION CONTROL
Environment - don't mess with it
There is an urgent need to change our technologies and adopt the ones,
which not only uses less energy and harness renewable sources, but also can effectively and economically capture or convert to harmless elemental gases, all the GHGs released to the environment.
