PROCESS CONTROL
Freedom from harmonic pollution

DB Power Electronics (P) Ltd, the three-decade-old premier power electronics company in India, has come to the rescue of all the harmonics affected users. The company's state-of-the-art designed digital active power conditioner named as Swan is a unique answer to all the harmonic problems. Swan dynamically eliminates the harmonics from the utility power source and improves on the power factor nearer to unity.

INTERVIEW
"Prompt customer service is the key to our success"
Although  Analyser Instruments Company Pvt Ltd (AICPL) was founded in 1996, its founder and managing director Dr S K Gupta has been involved in the field of analysis systems for more than three decades. Dr Gupta began his career with Instrumentation Ltd (IL), Kota and was trained at the works of Hartmann & Braun on analysers and analysis systems in 1977. He was involved in analysers and analyser systems activity at IL for more than two decades. Later, he joined the analyser system division of Emerson Process Management. AICPL provides high quality competitively priced state-of-the-art technology gas and water analysis systems in cooperation with Fuji Electric, Japan, IC Controls, Canada and Bieler + Lang, Germany. "Our gas & water analysers and analysis systems as well as gas detectors are in great demand and we are expanding our product range by increasing the number of components measured by products offered by us. We are one stop shop to meet all the requirements of customers in on-line analytical instrumentation market," says

Modeling and simulation of binary distillation column design using Jafarey, Douglas and McAvoy method
Model can be defined as an abstract representation of a system usually containing structural, logical or mathematical relationships which describe a system in terms of state, entities and their attributes sets, process, events, activities and decays. Simulation is considered to be the computation technique to solve problems by the observation of the performance of the dynamic model of the system. Distillation, king of separation process, is the most important and most visible separation technology. The main purpose of distillation is to separate a mixture of several components by taking advantage of their difference in volatilities or separation of more volatile materials from those less volatile or non-volatile materials. In the present studies, Jafarey, Douglas and McAvoy method is derived for modeling and simulation and advanced language C++ computer program is developed and executed for application for any binary distillation systems.

Kinetic study: Methyl acetate esterification catalyzed by Amberlyst-15
In this paper, the kinetic parameters were obtained for the liquid phase reversible reaction of methanol with acetic acid catalyzed by Amberlyst-15. Such parameters are required for many different applications of the model reaction namely, synthesis of methyl acetate, removal of dilute acetic acid from wastewater, and hydrolysis of methyl acetate in reactive distillation or reactive membrane distillation. Experiment were conducted in a batch reactor and determined the kinetic parameters in the temperature range 302 - 333K by varying the catalyst to feed ratio, molar feed ratio and also fit the data in arrhenius diagram and find the activation energy.  B L Pangarkar, V A Bhosale, Dr M G Sane

RESEARCH
Study of ultrasonic velocity in binary mixtures of diglyme with alkanes using artificial neural network
Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is applied to mixtures of long chain polymer with higher alkanes for evaluating ultrasonic velocity at different temperatures and concentrations at which experimental data are not available. From statistical approach, it is observed that ANN is successful in predicting ultrasonic velocity.

BIOFUEL
Studies on biomethanation of water hyacynth
Kinetics of biogas produced during the anaerobic digestion of water hyacinth has been studied in a batch reactor. The role of methanogenic and non - methanogenic bacteria and effect of ultrasound on biogas generation has been studied.

Decolourisation of violet dye using electrocoagulationIn
The present study, electrocoagulation method has been used for the removal of colour from solutions containing Crystal violet dye. The effect of operational parameters such as initial pH of the solution, inter electrode distance, time of electrolysis, initial dye concentration and solution conductivity were studied in an attempt to reach higher color removal efficiency.
